Polish at the doctor’s – how to describe symptoms and understand the doctor

In short

At the doctor’s in Polish, three things matter most: being able to book an appointment, describe your symptoms and understand the doctor’s instructions. You most often describe symptoms with the construction boli mnie + a part of the body (Boli mnie gardło – I have a sore throat) or mam + a symptom in the accusative (Mam gorączkę – I have a fever). Add how long it has lasted: od wczoraj, od trzech dni (since yesterday, for three days). We teach language here – the page does not replace medical advice. You can practise a conversation with a doctor with a teacher at a trial lesson.

Where you are going – names of places and people

Before you describe a problem, you need to know whom to book with. You will hear these words at reception and read them on consulting-room doors.

How to book an appointment

A few sentences are enough at reception. Say whom you want to book with and when you can come.

  • Dzień dobry, chciałbym zapisać się do lekarza rodzinnego. / Chciałabym… – Good morning, I would like to book an appointment with a family doctor.
  • Czy jest wolny termin na dzisiaj? – Is there a free slot for today?
  • Mam skierowanie do dermatologa. – I have a referral to a dermatologist.
  • Mogę przyjść po szesnastej. – I can come after four o’clock.
  • Czy mogę prosić o teleporadę? – May I ask for a telephone consultation?
  • Chciałbym odwołać wizytę na czwartek. – I would like to cancel my appointment for Thursday.

How to describe symptoms

You usually describe symptoms with one of three constructions. Each has different grammar, so it is worth learning them as whole sentences.

Symptoms in Polish
ConstructionExamples
boli mnie + nominativeBoli mnie głowa / brzuch / gardło / ząb. (my head / stomach / throat / tooth hurts)
Bolą mnie plecy / nogi. (plural → bolą; my back / legs hurt)
mam + accusativeMam gorączkę, kaszel, katar, biegunkę, wysypkę. (I have a fever, a cough, a runny nose, diarrhoea, a rash)
jest mi / czuję sięJest mi niedobrze. Jest mi zimno. Źle się czuję. (I feel sick. I am cold. I feel bad.)
other common sentencesKręci mi się w głowie. Swędzi mnie skóra. Wymiotuję. Kaszlę w nocy. (I feel dizzy. My skin itches. I am vomiting. I cough at night.)

Add the time and the intensity to your description – the doctor will almost always ask about them:

  • od rana, od wczoraj, od tygodnia, od trzech dni (since morning, since yesterday, for a week, for three days; after od – the genitive);
  • trochę, bardzo, coraz bardziej, cały czas, czasami, głównie w nocy (a little, very, more and more, all the time, sometimes, mainly at night);
  • Jestem uczulony na penicylinę. / Jestem uczulona na orzechy. (I am allergic to penicillin. / I am allergic to nuts.)
  • Biorę leki na ciśnienie. / Nie biorę żadnych leków. (I take blood pressure medication. / I do not take any medication.)

Boli mnie głowa. → past tense: Bolała mnie głowa.
Boli mnie ząb. → Bolał mnie ząb.
Boli mnie ucho. → Bolało mnie ucho.
The verb agrees with what hurts – not with the person who is speaking.

What the doctor says – instructions and questions

The doctor speaks fast and uses polite forms. The sentences below are the ones you will hear most often in the consulting room.

Dialogue 1: in the family doctor’s consulting room

Doctor: Dzień dobry. Co panu dolega?
Patient: Dzień dobry. Od trzech dni boli mnie gardło i mam gorączkę.
Doctor: Jaka była najwyższa temperatura?
Patient: Wczoraj wieczorem trzydzieści osiem i pół.
Doctor: Ma pan kaszel albo katar?
Patient: Katar tak, kaszlu nie mam.
Doctor: Czy jest pan na coś uczulony?
Patient: Nie, na nic.
Doctor: Dobrze. Proszę otworzyć usta… Wypiszę receptę. Potrzebuje pan zwolnienia lekarskiego?
Patient: Tak, poproszę. Jak mam brać ten lek?
Doctor: Dwa razy dziennie, po jedzeniu. Wszystko jest też na recepcie.

Note kaszlu nie mam – after a negation the noun goes into the genitive: mam kaszel, but nie mam kaszlu.

Dialogue 2: booking by phone

Receptionist: Przychodnia, słucham.
Patient: Dzień dobry. Chciałabym zapisać się do lekarza rodzinnego.
Receptionist: Poproszę PESEL.
Patient: Już podaję… Czy jest możliwa wizyta jeszcze dzisiaj?
Receptionist: Dzisiaj mogę zaproponować teleporadę o czternastej albo wizytę jutro o dziewiątej.
Patient: Wolę wizytę jutro o dziewiątej.
Receptionist: Dobrze, zapisuję. Proszę przyjść dziesięć minut wcześniej.

Mistakes that can mislead the doctor

The most common mistakes come from translating literally from your native language. The doctor will usually understand, but the correct form saves time and avoids misunderstandings.

Mistakes and correct forms
Instead ofSayWhy
Ja boli głowa.Boli mnie głowa.the person is in the accusative: mnie
Boli mnie plecy.Bolą mnie plecy.plecy is plural
Mam temperatura.Mam gorączkę. / Mam temperaturę.after mam – the accusative
Proszę o przepis na lek.Proszę o receptę.przepis means a cooking recipe or a legal regulation; the document from the doctor is a recepta
Jestem chory od trzy dni.Jestem chory od trzech dni.after od – the genitive

Important: in a life-threatening emergency, call the emergency number. Prepare two sentences for such a call in advance: your address and one sentence about what happened.

After the appointment

After the appointment you usually go to a pharmacy – you will find the vocabulary of prescriptions and leaflets in our guide Polish at the pharmacy and in the shop. If you work in care or healthcare, take a look at the vocabulary for care and medicine. Conversations at the doctor’s are best practised live – the conversation club works well for this. Prefer to start individually? At a trial lesson the teacher will practise a doctor’s appointment with you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I say in Polish that something has hurt for a long time?

Use od with the genitive: Boli mnie kolano od miesiąca (my knee has hurt for a month) or od dłuższego czasu (for quite a while). You can also add: coraz bardziej (more and more).

What does “L4” mean?

It is the colloquial name for a sick note, that is, a document confirming that you cannot work because of illness.

Can I come to the doctor with a person who will translate for me?

Usually yes – ask at reception. Even then it is worth knowing basic sentences about symptoms and allergies in Polish.

How do I tell the doctor that I do not understand their recommendations?

Say: Przepraszam, czy może pani to powtórzyć prostszymi słowami? (Sorry, could you repeat that in simpler words?) or Czy może pan zapisać, jak brać ten lek? (Could you write down how to take this medicine?)
