The future tense – two forms and how to choose

In short

The future tense has two forms in Polish, and the choice depends on the aspect of the verb. Perfective verbs form the simple future: zrobię, napiszę, kupię – a single action with a result. Imperfective verbs form the compound future with będę: będę robić or będę robił / robiła – a process or repetition. We never combine “będę” with a perfective verb: the form “będę zrobić” is wrong. At a trial lesson you will practise talking about your plans.

Two forms of the future tense

Whether you say zrobię or będę robić depends on whether you are thinking about the result or about the process itself. It is the same difference that we explain in our guide to verb aspect.

The simple and the compound future
The simple futureThe compound future
aspectperfectiveimperfective
structureconjugated as in the present tensebędę + infinitive or będę + the -ł form
meaninga single action, a resulta process, duration, repetition
exampleJutro napiszę list.Jutro cały dzień będę pisać.

The simple future

We conjugate a perfective verb in the same way as a verb in the present tense – but the meaning is future. That is why kupię does not mean “I am buying now”, but “I will buy later”.

Conjugation in the simple future

jazrobięnapiszęprzyjdęwezmępowiem

on / ona / onozrobinapiszeprzyjdzieweźmiepowie
myzrobimynapiszemyprzyjdziemyweźmiemypowiemy
wyzrobicienapiszecieprzyjdziecieweźmieciepowiecie
oni / onezrobiąnapisząprzyjdąwezmąpowiedzą

Other common forms: pojadę, pojedziesz (pojechać), pójdę, pójdziesz (pójść), zjem, zjesz, zjedzą (zjeść), dam, dasz, dadzą (dać), zobaczę (zobaczyć), zadzwonię (zadzwonić).

The compound future

We form the compound future from the verb być in the future tense and an imperfective verb. First, the conjugation of “być”:

The verb “być” in the future tense
SingularPlural
ja będęmy będziemy
ty będzieszwy będziecie
on / ona / ono będzieoni / one będą

After “będę” you can use the infinitive or the form in -ł (the same as in the past tense, but without the personal ending). Both forms are correct and mean the same thing:

Two variants of the compound future
Personwith the infinitivewith the -ł form
jabędę pracowaćbędę pracował / pracowała
tybędziesz pracowaćbędziesz pracował / pracowała
on / onabędzie pracowaćbędzie pracował / pracowała
mybędziemy pracowaćbędziemy pracowali / pracowały
wybędziecie pracowaćbędziecie pracowali / pracowały
oni / onebędą pracowaćbędą pracowali / pracowały

Tip: the variant with the infinitive is easier, because it does not change according to gender. With the verbs musieć, móc, chcieć + an infinitive we use the -ł form: Będę musiał pracować w sobotę (not: “będę musieć pracować”). Będzie mogła przyjść później.

Imperfective-only verbs: będę mieć, będę mieszkać

Verbs that have no perfective partner form only the compound future: będę mieć czas, będę mieszkać w Polsce, jutro będę wiedzieć więcej. An exception: być has its own form – będę, not “będę być”.

Plans in the present tense

As in many languages, we often talk about fixed plans in the present tense, especially with a time expression:

  • Jutro pracuję do szesnastej.
  • W sobotę jedziemy do Wrocławia.
  • W przyszłym tygodniu mam egzamin.

Plans and intentions are also expressed by the verbs zamierzać, planować, chcieć, mieć zamiar (to intend, plan, want, have the intention) + infinitive: Zamierzam zapisać się na kurs.

The future tense in sentences with “kiedy” and “jeśli”

Unlike in English, after kiedy, jak, jeśli, gdy (when, as, if, when) we use the future tense when we talk about the future:

Kiedy skończę pracę, zadzwonię do ciebie. (English: When I finish…)
Jeśli będzie padać, zostaniemy w domu.
Jak dostanę wynik, od razu ci napiszę.

Words that point to the future

jutro, pojutrze, za chwilę, za tydzień, za miesiąc, wkrótce, niedługo, kiedyś, w przyszłym tygodniu, w przyszłym roku, w przyszły piątek, po wakacjach (tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, in a moment, in a week, in a month, soon, before long, some day, next week, next year, next Friday, after the holidays).

Example sentences

Za miesiąc przeprowadzę się do nowego mieszkania.
Przez całe wakacje będę pracować w hotelu.
Czy jutro będzie pan w biurze?
Nie martw się, pomogę ci z formularzem.
Od września będziemy chodzić na kurs dwa razy w tygodniu.
Zobaczymy się po świętach.

Common mistakes in the future tense

  • “Będę zrobić”, “będę pójść” – correct: zrobię, pójdę.
  • “Będę pracuję” – after “będę” comes the infinitive or the -ł form: będę pracować.
  • “Jutro przeczytam książkę cały dzień” – duration requires the imperfective: jutro cały dzień będę czytać.
  • A woman says “będę robił” – correct: będę robiła or będę robić.
  • “Ja będę być w domu” – correct: będę w domu.

Exercise: result or process?

Put the verb into the future tense. Think about whether it is about a result or a process.

  1. Jutro ______ (zadzwonić – ja) do urzędu.
  2. W przyszłym roku ______ (mieszkać – my) w Poznaniu.
  3. Czy ______ (przyjść – ty) na moje urodziny?
  4. Cały weekend ______ (uczyć się – ona) do egzaminu.
  5. Kiedy ______ (dostać – ja) wypłatę, ______ (kupić – ja) nowy telefon.
  6. Dzieci ______ (być) w szkole do piętnastej.
  7. Jeśli nie ______ (zdążyć – my) na autobus, ______ (wziąć – my) taksówkę.

Answers

  1. zadzwonię
  2. będziemy mieszkać (or będziemy mieszkali / mieszkały)
  3. przyjdziesz
  4. będzie się uczyć (or będzie się uczyła)
  5. dostanę, kupię
  6. będą
  7. zdążymy, weźmiemy

Talking about plans is a frequent topic in the oral exam. In individual lessons we practise it on your real plans, and grammar tasks from the B1 exam will show how the future tense is tested. The first step is a trial lesson.

Frequently asked questions

Are “będę robić” and “będę robił” the same thing?

Yes, both variants are correct and have the same meaning. The form with the infinitive does not change according to gender, while the -ł form does: będę robił (man), będę robiła (woman).

Why does “pojadę” mean the future and “jadę” the present?

“Pojechać” is a perfective verb, so its form conjugated like the present tense means the future. “Jechać” is imperfective: “jadę” is now, and in the future it is “będę jechać”.

How do I say “I’m going to…” in Polish?

Most often with the simple future (“Zrobię to jutro”) or with the verb “zamierzać” or “mieć zamiar”: “Zamierzam zdawać egzamin w czerwcu”.
