Prepositions in Polish – with which case?

In short

A preposition is a short word before a noun or pronoun, e.g. do, w, na, z, o, za, przez (to, in, on, with, about, behind, through). In Polish every preposition requires a particular case: bez always combines with the genitive (kawa bez cukru), and przez with the accusative (przez park). Some prepositions, e.g. w, na, za, pod, nad, combine with two cases and their meaning changes accordingly: jestem na poczcie (where?), but idę na pocztę (where to?). At a trial lesson the teacher will point out which combinations to practise first.

Prepositions by case

It is best to learn prepositions together with the case they require. The table collects the most common prepositions; you will find the noun forms in each case in the cases cheat sheet.

Prepositions with two cases

Some prepositions combine with two cases. Usually one case answers the question gdzie? (where? – place), and the other dokąd? (where to? – direction) or has a different meaning.

Dokąd, gdzie, skąd – three questions about place

Every place has three “versions”: where I am going, where I am and where I am coming back from. The prepositions for them form fixed triplets.

Verbs with prepositions

Many verbs combine with a specific preposition. In other languages the preposition may be different or absent altogether – that is why it is worth learning whole combinations.

Z or ze? W or we?

Before some groups of consonants, prepositions get an additional -e to make them easier to pronounce: ze mną, ze szkoły, ze swoim, we wtorek, we Wrocławiu, we mnie. With the pronouns mnie and mną the forms with “e” are very common: ode mnie, przeze mnie, nade mną, pode mną, przede mną, beze mnie, and in the combinations ze mną and we mnie they are obligatory.

Common calques and mistakes with prepositions

  • “Czekam autobus” – correct: czekam na autobus.
  • “Idę do poczty” – correct: idę na pocztę.
  • “Rozmawiam po telefonie” (a calque from Russian or Ukrainian) – correct: rozmawiam przez telefon.
  • “Tęsknię po domu” – correct: tęsknię za domem.
  • “Przyjadę za tydzień” meaning “I will come and stay for a week” – correct: przyjadę na tydzień.
  • “Gram na piłkę” – correct: gram w piłkę (for an instrument we use “na”: na pianinie).

Frequently asked questions

How many prepositions do I need to know at level B1?

In practice several dozen, but the most common ones number about a dozen: do, od, z, bez, dla, u, w, na, o, po, przy, za, przed, nad, pod, między, przez. With them you can build most everyday sentences.

Do we always say “na” with the names of countries?

No. Most countries go with “w” and “do”: w Polsce, do Gruzji. A few names go with “na”, e.g. na Węgrzech, na Litwie, na Słowacji – these combinations have to be memorised.

How can I remember which preposition requires which case?

Learn whole expressions, e.g. “bez cukru”, “z mlekiem”, “w domu”, “na pocztę”. When you hear an expression many times, the ending starts to “sound right” and you no longer have to think about the rule.
