Polish for partners of Poles – talk freely with the family
The “Polish for partners” course is for people whose partner is Polish – and who want to talk with their partner’s family, follow conversations at the table and feel at ease in a Polish home. The programme is based on situations from the life of a mixed couple: visiting the in-laws, holidays, friends, everyday matters. We run lessons online individually or for two, and the course can also be bought by the Polish partner – for example as a gift.
For couples in which one partner is Polish
The course is for people at level A1 to B2 who live in Poland or visit it with their partner. At home you often speak English or Spanish, but with your partner’s grandparents, parents or neighbours you cannot manage without Polish. The course is also useful for people who are planning a wedding or a move to Poland and want to prepare in advance.
What you will learn
You learn the Polish that is spoken at home, not at an office – with colloquial forms, diminutives and phrases that are not in exam textbooks.
| Situation | Sample phrases |
|---|---|
| The first visit to your partner’s parents | Bardzo miło mi państwa poznać. Dziękuję za zaproszenie. |
| At the table | Wszystko jest pyszne! Poproszę jeszcze trochę. Dziękuję, już nie dam rady. |
| Holidays and celebrations | Wesołych Świąt! Wszystkiego najlepszego! Sto lat! |
| Talking about yourself | Poznaliśmy się w Barcelonie. Pracuję jako programistka. |
| Everyday life as a couple | Kupisz chleb po drodze? Kto dziś gotuje? |
Example from a lesson – diminutives and forms of address:
Your partner calls you Tomku, her grandmother – Tomeczku, and you address her mother as proszę pani until she suggests otherwise. The teacher explains that in Polish families the switch to ty or to mamo and tato is usually proposed by the older person – and that Tomek, Tomuś and Tomeczek are still the same name, only with a different charge of tenderness.
What the classes look like
A lesson lasts 50 minutes on Google Meet. You can learn individually or in a pair with another person at a similar level – for example someone who also has a Polish partner. The teacher explains in English, Russian, Spanish or Polish and chooses topics to match what is happening in your life: holidays are coming – we practise wishes and traditions; you are going to visit the family – we practise conversation at the table.
Tip: a Polish partner is the best material for practice, but rarely a good teacher of grammar – it is hard for them to explain why we say dwa koty, but pięć kotów. What works best is a division of roles: the teacher explains the rules, and at home you practise them in conversation.
From family to practical matters
- A trial lesson with a diagnosis – your level, goal and the situations in which you need Polish most.
- Family and home – introducing yourself, family, housing, food.
- Conversations at the table – understanding fast, colloquial Polish and joining in the conversation.
- Polish holidays and customs – Christmas Eve, Easter, name days, a wedding, wishes.
- Practical matters – doctor, shop, office, as needed.
If you want to learn more systematically, combine it with the from-scratch course or with the conversation club.
What the course includes
- Individual or couple lessons, adjusted to your life.
- A list of phrases for the nearest occasion – a birthday, holidays, a visit to the family.
- Questions to the teacher via WhatsApp – e.g. “what did grandpa mean by that?”.
- A monthly progress report.
Sign up or give the course as a gift
Book a trial lesson – you can sign up yourself, or your partner can do it for you. At the trial lesson you will agree the first topics with the teacher, for example the coming holidays or a visit to the family. You can read more about the form of the classes in the description of individual lessons.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Polish partner be present at the lesson?
At the trial lesson – yes, if you want to tell us about your needs together. In regular lessons it is better to learn without them, so as not to slip into translating.
Can I buy a Polish course for my partner as a gift?
Yes. Write to us as the buyer, and we will agree the date of the trial lesson directly with the person who will be learning.
Does the course for partners prepare for an exam?
Not directly – it focuses on conversation and everyday life. If you need a certificate, choose the B1 course or combine both programmes.
