Karta Polaka course – prepare calmly for the consul interview
The “Karta Polaka” course prepares you for the interview in which the consul checks your basic knowledge of the Polish language and your knowledge of Polish traditions. The programme includes 8 individual lessons and two simulated consul interviews with feedback from the teacher. The Act on the Karta Polaka does not require a B1 certificate – it requires at least a basic knowledge of the language, which the consul assesses in the interview. At a trial lesson we will check how much you understand and how you talk about yourself, and then draw up a plan leading up to your interview date.
Who will benefit from the course
The course is for people applying for the Karta Polaka who have no Polish school certificate or language certificate – so their knowledge of the language will be assessed by the consul (or the voivode) in an interview. It is useful both for those who speak Polish poorly and get stressed by the interview, and for those who speak fluently but cannot talk about their family history and traditions in an organised way. We explain the requirements and the procedure in our guide to the Karta Polaka.
What the Act requires – and what it does not
The Act on the Karta Polaka requires “at least a basic knowledge of the Polish language” and knowledge and cultivation of Polish traditions and customs. It does not specify B1 or any other level on the A1–C2 scale – that is why we do not promise that “A2 is enough”. So we work on what the interview tests: understanding the questions, answering in full sentences and asking for repetition when you do not understand something.
What you will learn
We work on three areas that recur in typical consul interviews. These are typical conversation topics, not an official list of consulate questions – every interview looks a little different.
| Area | What we practise | Sample sentence |
|---|---|---|
| About yourself and your family | introducing yourself, work, Polish roots, who in the family was Polish | Mój pradziadek urodził się pod Lwowem i był Polakiem. W domu babcia śpiewała nam polskie kolędy. |
| Traditions and holidays | Christmas Eve, Easter, All Saints’ Day, national holidays | W Wigilię dzielimy się opłatkiem i zostawiamy jedno wolne miejsce przy stole. |
| History and culture | the most important dates, figures, national symbols | Jedenastego listopada Polacy świętują odzyskanie niepodległości w 1918 roku. |
| Why the Karta Polaka | motivation, plans, connection with Poland | Chcę lepiej poznać kraj moich przodków i w przyszłości pracować w Polsce. |
You will find more examples in our typical consul’s questions and the short history of Poland.
What the classes look like
All lessons are individual, last 50 minutes and take place on Google Meet. The teacher starts with your family story – the natural beginning of a Karta Polaka interview – and helps you arrange it into a few simple, correct sentences. Then come traditions, history and questions that may surprise you. You get explanations in Polish, English, Russian or Spanish.
Example from a lesson – a typical mistake of Russian and Ukrainian speakers:
The student says: „Ja mam dwadzieścia pięć lat i ja pracuję jako kierowca.” In Polish we usually leave out the pronoun ja, because the verb form already says who is acting: Mam dwadzieścia pięć lat i pracuję jako kierowca. A small thing, but thanks to it the answer sounds natural.

- Improvement and the second simulation – just before the date of your interview.

Important: nobody can guarantee a positive decision – the consul decides about the Karta Polaka. What we can do is make sure that in the interview you understand the questions and answer calmly, in full sentences.
Already have an interview date?
Book a trial lesson and tell us when your interview is scheduled – we will draw up a plan up to that day. If the date is close, we can make the lessons more frequent.
Frequently asked questions
Do you run the course in Russian?
You can get explanations in Russian, English, Spanish or Polish. The conversation practice itself is in Polish, because that is what the consul interview looks like.
How long before the consul interview should I start the course?
Preferably a few weeks earlier, so that there is room for revision between lessons. If the date is very close, we focus on your family history and the most common topics.
Is the interview simulation available without the course?
Yes, you can order just a simulated consul interview with feedback – it is a good check if you already speak Polish well.
After the Karta Polaka, will I need a B1 certificate?
Not for the Karta Polaka itself. A document confirming your knowledge of Polish – most often a certificate of at least B1 – will be needed only if you later want to apply for Polish citizenship.
