The instrumental – the fifth case (z kim? z czym?)
The instrumental answers the questions (z) kim? (z) czym? ((with) whom? (with) what?). We use it when we say who we do something with (idę z bratem), what we do something with or what we travel by (piszę długopisem, jadę autobusem) and who or what we are (jestem nauczycielką). The endings are simple: masculine and neuter take -em, feminine -ą, and the plural -ami. Want to talk about your work without mistakes? Start with a trial lesson.
When we use the instrumental
The instrumental has five main uses. It also has the simplest endings of all the cases, so you will quickly start using it correctly. You can see how it compares with the others in the cases cheat sheet.
- Together with someone or something – after “z”: Mieszkam z rodzicami. Rozmawiam z kierownikiem. Poproszę herbatę z cytryną.
- Tool and means of transport – without a preposition: Jem widelcem. Płacę kartą. Jadę do pracy tramwajem. Lecę samolotem.
- Profession, nationality, role – after “być” and “zostać” (to be, to become): Jestem spawaczem. Ona jest Gruzinką. Chcę zostać pielęgniarką.
- Verbs that take the instrumental: interesować się, zajmować się, opiekować się, kierować, zarządzać, cieszyć się, martwić się (to be interested in, deal with, look after, manage, run, be glad about, worry about): Interesuję się historią. Opiekuję się starszą panią. Kieruję zespołem.
- Place after “nad, pod, przed, za, między” (where?): Lampa wisi nad stołem. Czekam przed domem. Sklep jest za rogiem.
The instrumental also hides in a few expressions of time: wieczorem, nocą, latem, zimą (in the evening, at night, in summer, in winter) – Latem jeździmy nad jezioro.
“Jestem lekarzem” – a profession after the verb być
After być a noun goes in the instrumental, and after to jest in the nominative. An adjective on its own after “być” stays in the nominative, but an adjective with a noun moves to the instrumental.
| Correct | Why |
|---|---|
| Jestem kierowcą. | być + noun → instrumental |
| To jest kierowca. | to jest + noun → nominative |
| Jestem zmęczony. | być + an adjective alone → nominative |
| Jestem doświadczonym kierowcą. | być + adjective and noun → instrumental |
| Byłam wtedy studentką. | the same in the past tense |

Endings in the plural
In the plural, almost all nouns take the ending -ami: z kolegami, z dziewczynami, przed oknami, z rodzicami, autobusami.
A short list of words takes the ending -mi – they are very common, so it is worth knowing them:
| Nominative plural | Instrumental plural | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ludzie | ludźmi | Lubię pracować z ludźmi. |
| dzieci | dziećmi | Jadę na wakacje z dziećmi. |
| przyjaciele | przyjaciółmi | Spotykam się z przyjaciółmi. |
| bracia | braćmi | Rozmawiam z braćmi przez telefon. |

Adjectives and pronouns in the instrumental

| mój | moim | moją | moimi |
| ten | tym | tą | tymi |
| example | z moim starszym bratem | z tą miłą panią | z nowymi kolegami |
Personal pronouns in the instrumental: mną, tobą, nim, nią, nami, wami, nimi. Before mną, instead of “z” we say ze: Chodź ze mną. The form ze also appears before some consonant clusters: ze swoim szefem, ze wszystkimi.
Prepositions with the instrumental

| za | behind, on the other side (behind) | Parking jest za budynkiem. |
| między | between two things (between) | Apteka jest między bankiem a pocztą. |
Where or where to? After nad, pod, przed, za, między the instrumental answers the question gdzie? (where?), and the accusative answers dokąd? (where to?): Jesteśmy nad morzem, but jedziemy nad morze.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the instrumental called “narzędnik” in Polish?
The name comes from the word “narzędzie” (tool): one of the functions of this case is to indicate the tool we do something with, e.g. “kroję chleb nożem” (I cut bread with a knife).
Is “być” always followed by the instrumental?
The instrumental follows “być” with a noun: “jestem studentem”. When “być” is followed by an adjective alone, the nominative stays: “jestem zmęczony”. In sentences with “to jest” we also use the nominative.
How do I say “I went in my friend’s car”?
Just like this: “pojechałem samochodem kolegi” – “samochodem” is the instrumental (means of transport), and “kolegi” is the genitive (whose car). One sentence often combines several cases.
Do we say “z tą panią” or “z tę panią”?
In the instrumental the correct form is “z tą panią”. The form “tę” belongs to the accusative: “znam tę panią”.
