A job interview in Polish – recruiter questions and sample answers

In short

At a job interview in Polish you will usually hear a few recurring questions: about you, about your experience, about your availability and about your salary expectations. Answer briefly, in the past tense about experience (Pracowałem jako magazynier – I worked as a warehouse worker) and in the present about what you can do now. Address the recruiter as pan / pani with the verb in the 3rd person, and give your profession in the instrumental case: Jestem spawaczem (I am a welder). Also prepare two or three questions for the employer. You can practise the whole interview with a teacher at a trial lesson.

Pan, pani, państwo – the polite form

At a job interview you address the recruiter as pan (to a man), pani (to a woman) or państwo (to several people) – with the verb in the 3rd person, as if talking about someone else. You switch to ty only when the other person suggests it.

The “ty” form and the polite form

The most common recruiter questions and sample answers

Mistakes that spoil the first impression

Most mistakes concern age, profession and time – in these areas Polish differs from many other languages.

Mistakes and correct forms
Instead ofSayWhy
Ja jestem kierowca.Jestem kierowcą.after być the profession is in the instrumental case
Mnie jest trzydzieści lat.Mam trzydzieści lat.we express age with the verb mieć (to have)
Pracuję tu dwa lata.Pracuję tu od dwóch lat.an ongoing state: present tense + od + genitive
Masz jakieś pytania do mnie? (to a recruiter)Czy mogę zadać pytanie?the ty form sounds too familiar
Ja chcę dużo pieniędzy.Oczekuję wynagrodzenia na poziomie…we talk about money formally

How to prepare linguistically for the interview

The best preparation is a short self-introduction practised out loud. Write 5–6 sentences about yourself (your name, where you are from, your experience, what you can do, why you want this job), record yourself and listen back. Learn the name of your profession in the instrumental case and practise numbers and dates – they will certainly come up. For an interview in Polish you may also need a CV and a cover letter – you will find the rules of formal writing in our guide to formal letters.

We have collected ready-made phrases for everyday work in our guide to phrases at work, and you will find courses for your industry in the Polish at work section. Do you work in an office or in an international team? See our business Polish course. We will do a mock job interview with feedback at the trial lesson.

Frequently asked questions

Is a job interview in Poland held in Polish?

It depends on the company and the position. If the advert is in Polish, prepare for an interview in Polish – at least for part of it, e.g. the questions about experience and availability.

How do I introduce myself at a job interview in Polish?

Say your first name and surname, where you are from, how long you have lived in Poland and what your profession is: Nazywam się…, od trzech lat mieszkam w Polsce, jestem magazynierem.

How do I say that I do not understand the recruiter’s question?

Say: Przepraszam, czy może pani powtórzyć pytanie? (Sorry, could you repeat the question?) or Czy dobrze rozumiem, że pyta pan o…? (Do I understand correctly that you are asking about…?) That is better than answering a question you do not understand.

When can I address the recruiter as “ty” at a job interview?

Only when the recruiter suggests it, e.g. Mówmy sobie po imieniu (Let’s use first names). Until then, use the pan / pani form.
